A mobile or web application built around an AI language model that users interact with through romantic, flirtatious, or companion-style conversation. Most of these apps present a single character or a selectable set of characters and charge a subscription or credits for continued or premium chats.
These apps form a distinct category from platforms built around real creators, and the two often get confused in media coverage. Knowing which one you are looking at matters, since the characters in an AI girlfriend app are software, while a creator platform hosts real people publishing their own content.
Also called: AI companion app, AI chatbot girlfriend, girlfriend simulator, AI dating chatbot, virtual companion app
