Amelia on Bondage: what it is and how to try it

I'm Amelia. I'm 40, I live in London, and I have two teenage daughters who think I'm embarrassing. They're right, and I take it as a compliment. Today I want to talk about bondage, because people ask about it and a lot of the answers online are either silly or scary. Neither one helps you.

So let's do it properly. What it is, why people like it, how to try it without anyone getting hurt or feeling weird about it. Then I'll tell you what I get out of it.

What bondage actually is

Bondage means tying someone up or holding them still, with their full agreement, as part of a kink or a scene. That's it. Rope, cuffs, straps, a silk scarf if that's what you've got. It runs from a loose loop around the wrists to proper full-body rope work.

Some people picture a dungeon and leather everywhere. You can start in your own bedroom with something soft from a drawer. I've linked the plain definition here if you want the short version: bondage.

Why people like it

Everyone comes to it for a different reason, and I mean everyone. Some people love the feeling of being held, the weight of it, the fact that they can't fidget or plan or check their phone. Some love the other side, the giving up of control, because it's a holiday from being in charge of everything all the time.

Some people just like the craft. Tying is a skill. It takes focus and patience, and that focus is its own kind of quiet. And a lot of people find the honest truth of it: when you let someone hold you still, you have to trust them, and that trust feels like something.

Talk first. Before anything else.

This part is not the boring part. This part is the whole thing. Before any rope comes out, you talk. What do you want to try? What do you not want? Where does it stop? Say it out loud, out of bed, fully dressed, with tea if you like.

Pick a safeword, or a signal if talking will be hard. A word nobody would say by accident works, and so does dropping a set of keys or tapping a wall twice. Because movement is the thing you're taking away, you need a way to signal that doesn't need movement. That's the point.

Starting out safely

Start small. One wrist, loosely, in front of you, for two minutes. Not behind your back on the first go. Never around the neck, and nothing tight enough to change how someone breathes or feels their fingers.

Check in during the scene. Ask how it feels, look at their hands, watch their face. Keep scissors close, the kind that cut fabric fast, in case you need them. And never, ever leave a bound person alone. Not for a second, not for the doorbell. Untie slowly, and don't rush the bit afterwards.

The bit afterwards

Aftercare is a real thing and it's not only for heavy scenes. A blanket, water, a cuddle, a chat about what was good and what wasn't. Some people feel floaty, some feel wobbly, some feel nothing much at all. All normal. Give it ten minutes and be kind to each other.

If something didn't work, say so. That's not a failed evening, that's data. The next one is better for it.

My take on it

I spent a lot of my life being the one who sorts everything out. The sauce, the school runs, the plans. So being held still, by someone I trust, is honestly a rest. My mind goes quiet. I don't have to decide anything for twenty minutes. That's a luxury at 40.

I like the look of rope, too. I like that it's a skill somebody bothered to learn for me. Sweet on the surface, a little wicked underneath, that's me. You can read more about me on my profile, and there's plenty more where this came from.

Go slow, talk more than you think you need to, and look after each other. That's all of it, really. Take care of yourself.
